The Research Group in Computational Linguistics was founded in 1998 as part of the School of Humanities, Languages and Social Sciences (then called School of Languages and European Studies) and since 2005 it has been a member of the Research Institute in Information and Language Processing. The group is led by Prof. Ruslan Mitkov and is pursuing active research in a wide range of areas including anaphora resolution, automatic summarization, terminology extraction, question answering, corpus development and exploitation, information extraction and automatic generation of multiple-choice tests.
Prof. Ruslan Mitkov works closely with a team of young and dynamic researchers, the group having a wide range of expertise in the areas of computational linguistics and computer science. The list of members of the research group as well as their research interests can be found on the People section of the web site.
Our research is supported by the University of Wolverhampton, as well as by various funding boards such as Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), EU and UK and overseas companies. In addition to these projects, we are involved in a number of smaller scale bilateral projects with universities from other countries. For more details check the Research page for a list of current and past projects.
A regular seminar program is run where well-known experts are invited to present their research. In addition to theses seminars, the members of the group present their research on a regular basis. The Seminars section contains information about past and forthcoming talks.
Members of the group also teach courses on computational linguistic and machine translation in the School of Humanities, Languages and Social Sciences. More about these courses and supervision at undergraduate and postgraduate level can be found on the Teaching section of the web site.
